Rob and Conrad VS Carol and Daniel

conrad and robIn this corner, we have the unusual tag team of one yet-to-be convicted and one convicted felon; in the other corner, we have an award winning broadcaster and an award winning journalist*.

The alleged and paroled felons (APFs) seem to possess an arrogance, sense of entitlement, and lack of awareness that is as colossal as their ignorance and ego, in that order; the awarded broadcaster and journalist (ABJs) possess an enerring sense of truth, justice, and the Canadian way.Carol OffDaniel

The APFs are rich, one being much richer and, by his own estimation, much smarter than the other; the ABJs are rich in character and constantly seeking knowledge.

The APFs appear to feel that laws do not apply to them, that everyone is picking on them, and that even after they're caught on video, whether smoking crack, or emptying out their office files, they're not guilty; the ABJs aren't buying it.

In a sane world, this assault on intelligence would never have taken place. But if you are rich enough, you can buy your own TV show and display your unique lack of Vision to the world. Sadly, if you don't clean up your pet's defecation, flies feed on it.

I hope that Carol continues to stand up for broadcasting and journalistic honesty, and that Daniel wins his case to protect his good name.  I hope that we have a bully free holiday season, that the good are treated to peace and love, and the wicked get their lumps.

*Note: the paroled convicted felon once had an award, but he was asked to give it back. Canada wasn't buying it either.

Also noted, convicted, paroled felon Conrad Black interviewed Rob Ford, alleged felon who libelled Daniel Dale, Star reporter. Conrad was subsequently grilled by Carol Off for going soft on his questions to Ford, thereby putting the drug-using, gang hanging Mayor of Toronto in  a more positivve light than his really, really sorry scenario.

Lis SSeriously, the Ontario government lecturing the Toronto District School Board on accountability – let's see, the cost of the gas plant cancellations versus the TDSB overspending … hmmm.

It seems as though all levels of governance need to be more acountable to their taxpaying base. But we do like the hand over heart sincerity…if only.

“I COULDN’T CARE LESS”

Share this post:

"I couldn't care less!" Those were the defining and defiant words from the mouth of Prime Minister Steven Harper at the opening of the Conservative Party of Canada convention. There was no apology for the confusion, corruption, or cost of the scandal enveloping the Prime Minister's Office and the Senate. There was no acceptance of responsibility for the appointment of, previous praise of, and current condemnation of his three now disgraced Senators. There was not a single clear answer or explanation to any of the direct questions that had been asked in the House of Commons by the representatives of a majority of the Canadian people.DownloadedFile

"I couldn't care less," was the response to months of confusion, prorogation, and channel changing in parliament. This current scandal has been as much about the need of an incredulous public to have an honest explanation from the Prime Minister as it has been about the accusations surrounding Senators Duffy, Wallin, and Brazeau. How is it that expenses checked and approved by the Prime Minister for Senator Wallin suddenly become worthy of an RCMP fraud charge? How is it that Senator Duffy, the PM's star crowd pleaser from the last election campaign, suddenly gets the bums rush from the Conservative Caucus and the Senate? How is it that Nigel Wright, praised by the Prime Mnister for his honesty and humanity, suddenly becomes the devil of deception?

The truth, Canada, is that there is no Captain at the helm of our ship. We have a delusional, micromanaging megalomaniac at the wheel and the ship is off course. To every question begging a responsible answer, comes the current battle cry, "Jobs, Prosperity, Growth. and the Economy, stupid, the Economy." And the party faithful rise and cheer and wave their thundersticks.

A Eurpoean Union Free-Trade deal, still to be approved by the Provinces and every separate member nation of the European Union, will not be enough to mask the stench emanating from the Prime Minister's Office. You should care a whole lot more about what the majority of Canadians think, Mr. Prime Minister. The majority of Canadians are singing along with This Hour Has 22 Minutes, and their brilliant parody song, "Tories' by Borde – check it out on YouTube – the only thing we can do right now is laugh. Until we get an honest answer.

The Holyday is Over for Hudak

Share this post:

The recent by-election results in Ontario could be very bad news for the righties in Toronto. Toronto Council will be losing the reasonably competent Doug Holyday and Rob Ford will be losing a key ally. Provincially, Holyday's voice will unfortunately be neutered as an Opposition MPP, and locally a Ford-unfriendly Council could bypass an election and appoint a burr under the cheeks of Doug and Rob.Hudak

For Tim Hudak the news is even worse. Holyday's bragging rights were short lived – when the dust settled, the Liberals had taken 2 out of 3 close races. In his own riding of Etobicoke, fully supported by Ford Nation and the endorsement of Mike Harris, Holyday only led by 4%. In Scarborough the Liberals won by 5% and even in gas plant McGuinty's old riding the Liberals managed to hold on to a 3% lead. In London, the NDP swept away the Conservatives with 10% and thoroughly punished the Liberals in Windsor with an astonishing 40% margin of victory.

Ontario will see a minority government run by Kathleen Wynne and Andrea Horwath, and Tim Hudak will see the back of the door at the next Conservative leadership convention. They won't need riot police this time because no one cares. Until Ontario conservatives find another leader of the caliber of a progressive Bill Davis, the taste of Ipperwash, Walkerton, the destruction of the best education system in the world, downloading, amalgamations, and partisan fascism will remain bitter in our mouths.

Enjoy it while you can Tim, but I fear that Holyday was your goodbye present.

SERVE AND PROTECT or PUNISH AND ENSLAVE

Share this post:

I remember once believing in that motto: To Serve and Protect. For years, I taught children to always seek out a police officer if they were in trouble. They were right up there with ambulance drivers and paramedics and firepersons – people you could trust and who would come to your rescue. I remember when they wore friendly light blue shirts and red striped pants and drove bright yellow squad cars so you could find them easily.

Pollice2That all changed in Ontario under Mike Harris and his right-wing police state. Under Mike's watch the uniforms changed to the dark side of the force, and the blue shirts were hidden under black flak jackets. The squad cars got a patriotic law and order make-over, some even into stealth mode with stealth markings. I remember a Conservative political convention that Boss Harris held in Toronto near the end of his reign of terror. The people had begun to protest, so he had the Convention Centre surrounded by police in full Darth Vader riot gear. It was like a scene out of a totalitarian nightmare – the SS keeping the elected elite safe from the people.

Something has gone very wrong when the people who are hired by us and paid for by us no longer Serve and Protect but, like that ominous Decepticon, seem to Punish and Enslave. It doesn't matter now who the political leaders are – the new norm is order by intimidation. There is a good reason for Julian Fantino's meteoric rise to Conservative federal Cabinet Minister, and it has nothing to do with serving and protecting.

Somewhere between corrupt Toronto drug squads, the killing of Robert Dziekanski, the ineptitude and brutality of the G20 riot response, police who lie under oath, and the overkill of Sammy Yatim, I have lost faith. If this is the new normal, like the radar traps out for the end of the month quota rush, I do not like it. I do not endorse it. Bring back Sergeant Frank Preston and Yukon King and Rex. I want a police force that makes me feel safe and secure. What you are doing now makes our children cry at night.
